In recent times, the United States and Israel started a new wave of military attacks in the Islamic Republic of Iran in concert. Apart from the US-Israeli airstrikes, there was a simultaneous cyberattack.

The governments of all countries worldwide condemned the attacks and strengthened their security. Besides the aerial attacks, there were cyberattacks on various apps and websites.

The aerial attacks were aimed at prominent military and political leaders in Iran. These attacks have created a stir in the region, and the casualties have resulted in a strong response in Iran and other countries worldwide.

Cyberattacks: Details and Affected Platforms

The series of Iranian cyberattacks affected the religious apps, disrupted news websites, and reduced internet connectivity.

According to a Reuters report, the target was the well-known prayer app BadeSaba Calendar, which has over five million users. The messages were sent to the Iranian armed forces to leave their positions.

Moreover, Iran’s state and semi-official media channels faced the inaccessibility issues in recent cyberattacks. As per the Iranian media, the disruption was a result of a cyberattack on Iran’s digital infrastructure.

Moreover, the internet connectivity in Iran has been reduced by 4% compared to the normal speed due to the cyberattack and the Iranian government’s restrictions.

Cyber Warfare: A Regional Context

The latest cyberattacks on Iranian systems have marked a new trend, which is connected with growing geopolitical tensions.

  • According to Iran International, Pro-Israel cyber groups, like Predatory Sparrow, have recently targeted Iran’s financial institutions that have intercepted banking and cryptocurrency transactions.
  • Meanwhile, U.S. and allied authorities have warned that hackers linked to Iran might retaliate by attacking American companies and critical infrastructure, especially when Iran believes the United States is supporting military action against it.
  • In recent times, Iran-supported groups have gathered critical political information and threatened to publish the information. They have also launched cyberattacks against telecommunication systems.

These occurrences demonstrate the rising practice of cyberattacks coupled with military actions for propaganda, influence, economic, and strategic purposes.

Cyberattacks: Possible Motivations and Implications

The analysts suggest that there are multiple reasons behind the cyberattacks.

  • Digital platforms were hacked to create unrest among the public. Besides this, the vital reason is to erode the government support and weaken the public backing of the state institutions.
  • Additionally, the aim is to interfere with major news websites and control the information, which helps the government to build a narrative within the country and globally.
  • Moreover, attacks on financial institutions and communication channels will create economic and operational issues in Iran.

Modern warfare tactics include an effective balance of physical strikes with cyberattacks. Internet disconnectivity and hacked digital platforms have significantly impacted daily life in Iran.

Conclusion

Additionally, through conventional military attacks, the countries are facing digital security threats that have far more adverse consequences in psychological warfare.

The digital platforms have emerged as a critical front that helps countries to leverage them as a strategic tool. As the tension is increasing across the globe, we have to see how policymakers and experts will integrate it into global strategy.
